The MEP’s statement starts with a firm declaration that no terrorist attack can justify the destruction of a whole population. He goes on to state that Hamas is not reflective of the Palestinian cause, criticises actors like Roberta Metsola and Ursula von der Leyen, while finally calling for a two-state solution.

“No terrorist attack, no matter how severe, gives you the right to wipe an entire people off the face of the earth,” his social media statement reads. 

“The Palestinian people are not Hamas. The Palestinian people cannot be considered ‘collateral damage’. The Palestinian people also have fundamental rights. The Palestinian people cannot be held hostage in a tiny piece of land surrounded from all sides.”

Engerer went on to say that it seems that rather than learning from history, people are forgetting it.

“How hateful fascism is and how it leads to wars. It’s as if everyone forgot history, instead of all of us learning from it.”

Engerer further criticised the European Union, as well as its institutional leaders, for using the conflict as a means to push their own image.

“The leaders of European institutions are in a competition amongst themselves over who will take the first photo. After Metsola was the first to go to Ukraine, Von der Leyen hurriedly went to Israel at the moment Metsola was heading there, even though there wasn’t a mandate.”

“Undoubtedly, just as the terrorist attack was condemned, what is happening in Gaza should be condemned against the Geneva Convention, against the fundamental rights of the innocent and civilians.”
