Parliament Unanimously Approves Law Allowing 16-Year-Olds To Become Mayors
Parliament has unanimously approved a new bill that will allow 16 and 17-year-olds to become mayors in Malta, making the island the first EU country to do this.
Councillors below the age of 18 with the most votes will now be able to become mayors and deputy mayors of Maltese towns, until now, this could not be done.
“I believe with all my heart in the talents of our young people. We must continue to work together with organizations like the National Youth Council to foster more social and political activism in the young generations for a stronger, representative, and inclusive democracy,” National Heritage Minister Owen Bonnici said.
This law will come into force when President George Vella signs it in the coming days.
The bill has proved to be quite divisive with politicians supporting the idea while many civilians remain in disagreement.
Do you think 16-year-olds should be running towns?
