PN Leader Warns Maltese Youths Being Priced Out Of Property Market And Could Be Forced To Emigrate

Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia flagged the dire situation of the property market for Maltese youths seeking a place to rent or buy, warning the situation could eventually force them to emigrate.

At a political rally in Msida, Delia recounted how he recently met two young brothers who are concerned at the lack of available options for them after they graduate and land a job at some €1,300, which is some €200 higher than the average salary.

“They live in a small two bedroom apartment that their parents bought 10 years ago and which now costs around €900 a month to rent. If you add that up to the water and electricity bills, transport costs and WiFi, then these youths will never be able to rent their own property,” he said.

The Opposition leader didn’t propose any solutions but made it clear where he thinks the blame lies.

“The government is importing 13,000 foreigners every year and nine foreigners end up squeezing into an apartment that was built for two or three people,” he said. “We’ve always welcomed foreigners who want to become part of our community but the government’s plan is for these people to come here for a few months, earn some money and leave.”

“Meanwhile, we are witnessing the erosion of the social fabric which makes us Maltese – the way we know each other, live together and care about us – is ending.”

“Our youths will have no other option but to leave, and we’ll end up replacing them with people who don’t want to settle down here but rather stay here for a few months, make some money and leave. That’s how Joseph Muscat is changing our society, that’s the governments cosmopolitan vision.”
