PN MP Calls Jason Micallef’s Public Job Into Question After ‘Cruel’ Attack On Repubblika Head

PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut has described Jason Micallef’s recent remarks concerning Repubblika President Robert Aquilina as “obscene” and “cruel” and has questioned Micallef’s suitability as Chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency due to his overtly “partisan” stance.

Aquilina and Micallef engaged in a heated debate during a discussion programme on Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103 last Saturday.

Micallef consistently labelled Aquilina as an “agent of hate,” alleging that he and his Repubblika associates harboured a radical and perilous fixation on prosecuting former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

He also accused Aquilina of adopting a “martyr’s stance”, following the Repubblika president’s assertion that a series of court rulings had validated him as the true target of hate speech.

PN MP Sammut took to Facebook to question whether Micallef is indeed suitable to hold a public position, saying that “he has to decide whether he will be a partisan spokesperson, or whether he will be a public official.”

“If he wants to be Chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency, he must understand that, as a public official, he must refrain from expressing partisan views and inciting people against the courts and against individuals who are exercising their rights as citizens,” the MP continued.

He went on to say that if Micallef chooses to be a “partisan”, “his place is not in State or Civil agencies, even more so if he wants to continue serving as an agent to criminals.”

Sammut said that while 11 years ago, this was “customary behaviour” for civil servants and public authorities and agencies, “now it’s the complete opposite.”

“You have to be a partisan, closely related to and a paladin of those who abuse power to be appointed to these positions,” Sammut insisted.

Before Sammut’s statement, former PN MP and lawyer Jason Azzopardi also came to Aquilina’s defence and criticised Micallef’s “justification” of the notary’s house break-in.

In a Facebook statement, Azzopardi urged the authorities to combat these threats and condemn this type of behaviour.

“Your silence doesn’t go unnoticed,” he said, adding that he believes that slowly, the same climate of hatred which assassinated Daphne Caruana Galizia experienced in 2017, is being experienced by Aquilina today.

“Don’t say you weren’t warned,” Azzopardi stated.
