Adrian Delia addresses a crowd of people at Dar Centrali

The Nationalist Party’s administrative council will discuss the WhatsApp leaks concerning its leader Adrian Delia, as well as the domestic violence accusations made against him by his wife, in a meeting this evening.

A well-informed source told Lovin Malta that the discussion is expected to be a heated one, with some officials – including those traditionally loyal to Delia – “livid” at the situation and uncomfortable that their party’s leader might be a wife beater.

However, he does not assess the situation as grave enough for the administrative council, composed of 22 people, to demand Delia’s resignation.

Dissent has largely been quelled but the situation at the PN remains ‘fluid’

“It will be an ordinary meeting in challenging times for the party. Although things have calmed down recently, the situation remains very fluid,” he said. “Delia has denied all the allegations, he remains very popular among his supporters and there is no clear Step Two on what will happen if he is asked to leave. How would we explain to his supporters that we didn’t even give him a chance to contest an election?”

A high-ranking PN official recently started circulating a declaration calling for Delia’s resignation among MPs and Executive Council officials. Although there were rumblings that the parliamentary group could well have the numbers to force Delia to resign as Opposition leader, this dissent appears to have been quelled.

Over 80% of the PN’s sectional committees have publicly declared their trust in Delia, in what is widely being interpreted as a warning to MPs that they will lose their grassroots support if they try and oust their leader. Although several MPs and officials have, on condition of anonymity, called for Delia’s resignation, only PN Executive President Mark Anthony Sammut has publicly voiced his concerns.
