PN Turns To ‘Mater Dei Tal-Computers’ Owner As Its New Treasurer

Antoine Zammit, the owner of a computer repair store cheekily billed as ‘the Mater Dei of computers’, looks set to be the Nationalist Party’s new treasurer.

Richard Muscat, the head of the PN’s Electoral Commission, confirmed with Lovin Malta that Zammit was the only person to apply for the role.

Zammit runs Tiffranka Dot Com in Ħal Qormi, a computer repair store with a pharmacy-like slogan describing it as the ‘Mater Dei of Computers’.

He is a PN member (tesserat) and had unsuccessfully contested last May’s Ħaż-Żabbar local council election on the PN ticket.

The PN has been without a treasurer for over a month, since David Camilleri resigned amidst controversy over whether he should have been granted a vote during an Executive Council meeting, held to co-opt an MP in place of David Stellini.

Charles Selvaggi, a businessman and Msida councillor, was the only person to put his name forward for the role, but he withdrew his nomination shortly before the scheduled vote.

In a letter, he said he was withdrawing his nomination due to potential conflicts that could arise between the legal responsibilities of the treasurer role and his own job in the private sector. He added that he remains loyal to the PN and its leader Adrian Delia, who is facing a vote of confidence at the PN General Council.

The role of treasurer is a particularly sensitive one as it involves taking care of a political party’s accounts and donations. As per the party financing law, a treasurer is personally liable to a fine of up to €20,000 if the Electoral Commission finds irregularities in the party’s donations.
