Robert Abela Addresses The UN’s 80th General Assembly

Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed the United Nations'(UN) 80th General Assembly , emphasising that despite global crises, the UN’s mission remains crucial.
Drawing parallels between the post-Second World War era and today, Abela stressed the importance of hope, collective action, and adherence to the UN’s founding principles. Highlighting progress over eight decades, including improved global life expectancy and Malta’s journey to independence, Abela underscored the transformative power of multilateral cooperation.
Abela went on to call for tearing down physical and metaphorical walls- barriers that hinder dialogue, trade, and peace- citing lessons from Reagan and the Cold War. Urging UN reform, he advocated for a transparent selection of the Secretary-General, fairer Security Council representation, efficient operations and digital diplomacy.
The speech addressed urgent conflicts, notably in Ukraine and Gaza, emphasising ceasefires, humanitarian aid and a fair two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Abela went on to condemn indifference to human suffering, urging action grounded in law, empathy and cooperation. Migration and climate change are also highlighted as global challenges requiring coordinated, humane, and sustainable responses.
Concluding, Abela called on all nations to embrace multilateralism, break down barriers, and work together to safeguard peace, prosperity, and the planet, reaffirming the UN’s indispensability and the shared responsibility to improve it for the future.
