Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition leader Adrian Delia will go head to head in a recorded debate for the first time tonight, but Muscat is already playing mind games.

Launching the PL’s European Parliament manifesto this afternoon, Muscat said that Delia retracted his position in favour of the Malta-Gozo tunnel during the debate on Xtra.

“During the debate, he said that studies should be carried out on the tunnel and then he’ll decide what he thinks afterwards,” he said. “However, Parliament, including the Opposition leader, recently voted unanimously in favour of the project.”

“The motion we all voted for was that the project will take place according to the necessary studies but that it will take place. However, today the Opposition leader retracted his position and said he’ll only take a stance once the studies have taken place.”

The unorthodox motion was tabled last month by Transport Minister Ian Borg and Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana. Although the studies haven’t been published, all PL and PN MPs voted in favour, while the two PD MPs boycotted it. During the debate, the PN’s Gozo spokesperson Chris Said pledged that the party was “wholeheartedly” behind the project.
