Nationalist MEP David Casa has laid flowers at the Great Siege Monument in Valletta in honour of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana, a day after he was re-elected to the European Parliament.

“Daphne spoke the truth and they sought to silence her,” Casa said. “Joseph Muscat warned his party faithful to ensure I am not elected, to silence me too. But the Maltese electorate had different ideas.”

“I will not be silenced. This morning I paid my respects to Daphne Caruana Galizia, and as I did throughout the past months – I promise that I will ensure that justice always prevails, and that the truth always prevails.”

Casa has been one of the most vocal Maltese politicians who demanded justice and the shouldering of political responsibility in the wake of Caruana Galizia’s assassination in 2017

Pressure group Occupy Justice described his re-election and that of fellow PN MEP Roberta Metsola as a sign that the people want their representatives in Europe to continue the fight against impunity and for the rule of law to prevail.

Casa was re-elected to the European Parliament last night, winning 20,493 first-count votes, despite surveys projecting he risked losing his seat to Frank Psaila.

However, it was a disastrous night for the Nationalist Party, which lost the election by 42,656 votes and lost its third EU seat to the Labour Party.
