Return Of The King: Żaren Tal-Ajkla To Contest MEP Elections
Who needs Tal-Farfett when you have the energetic and unyielding Nazzareno Bonnici?
The 61-year-old, better known as ?aren tal-Ajkla, has thrown in his hat in the hopes of becoming one of Malta’s next MEPs. His candidature was today handed in ahead of the important May elections, which is already seeing a crowded field of contestants.
This is far from his first election, having contested four elections in 2003, 2013 and 2017.
?aren made a name for himself for his boisterous live events, where sizeable crowds would often follow him and chant his name
However, in the midst of all the singing and clapping, there was a sense that there was a bit of mean-spiritedness among his so-called followers, many of whom stood by his side, clapping and cheering – but failed to actually vote for him.
In his meetings, ?aren would often lambast the two major political parties for “wasting time in parliament” and for being corrupt, and even poked fun at AD when he had received more votes than Carmel Cacopardo.
In the 2014 MEP elections, he reportedly obtained 1,216 votes, and while he’s been laying low recently, it’s reasonable to believe that ?aren might be coming back to a village square near you sooner than you’d thought.
