‘Ridiculous’: Peter Agius Denies Handing Out Qormi Voters Figolli On Easter Sunday

PN MEP candidate Peter Agius insisted that he “never handed out figolli to voters in Qormi on Easter Sunday” after PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba referenced this amid his home-visit voucher controversy.

“I never distributed figolli on Easter Sunday,” Peter Agius told Lovin Malta. “All I did was distribute a few figolli to Net News workers and journalists the week before Easter to show my gratitude for free speech and the freedom of the media in a situation where the Labour government is systematically trying to gag free speech and free media.”

“And that is the figolli incident,” Agius explained. “This is ridiculous,” he exclaimed, adding, “Besides, I spent some €100 on those figolli. Agius Saliba spent €15,000.”

All this transpired after, earlier today, the PN MEP candidate took to social media to reveal that a family had approached him, sharing that they were given a voucher for laptop/PC services at the Notebook Centre in San Ġwann. A hundred of these vouchers were distributed during house visits in the run-up to the June elections.

Agius came out strongly against this move, calling it a “corrupt practice.”

Meanwhile, the PL MEP told the newsroom that he “can’t understand the story behind these vouchers issue.”

Agius Saliba insisted that “the law is very clear – these vouchers are not redeemable for products and can be used only for services.”

“Can Peter Agius justify if providing hundreds of free figolli during Easter Sunday in Qormi is a ‘corrupt practice’ or not?” he questioned.

“The electoral law clearly mentions specifically the distribution of ‘food, drinks, and entertainment’ – aren’t Peter’s figolli defined as food?”

On this, Peter Agius also told the newsroom that the PL MEP’s “rebuttal, saying that his handing out of the vouchers is a service, shows his incompetence or his effort to mislead public opinion, because the law doesn’t make any distinction between services and goods.”

“This incident shows how important it is to have honest politicians who are there to represent the people and who are there to abide by the laws. We cannot expect people who break the laws to represent us to make the laws better,” the PN MEP candidate remarked.
