Robert Abela Flies To ‘Challenging’ EU War Summit Discussing Ukraine And European Defence
A pivotal moment in European history and politics might be about to go down today… and as Malta’s prime minister, Robert Abela is heading there right now to be a part of it.
This morning, Abela posted on social media just before he flew off to “a challenging special EU Council”, one which is already being described by news agencies like Politico as a War Summit. “It doesn’t seem too much of an exaggeration to say that the future of the continent is at stake,” Politico said, describing today’s meeting.

Leaders of the European Union’s 27 countries will be meeting in Brussels today for the special European Council, no doubt prompted by US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to distance America from Europe’s security and last week’s fiery meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.
“We are living a defining moment for Ukraine and European security,” European Council President António Costa has said ahead of today’s summit, which will not only discuss continued support for Ukraine, but also European defence in general. “The EU and its member states are ready to take more responsibility for European security.” This, of course, comes less than 24 hours after European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen introduced the ReArm Europe proposal, an €800-billion plan to mobilise funds to finance a massive ramp-up in defence spending.
As for Malta, meanwhile, Abela has said his priorities during today will be “safeguarding our neutrality, promoting peace, and ensuring that our people’s hard-earned money and taxes go towards bettering lives”.
