Sigh Of Relief For PN As Lawyer Joe Ellis Triumphs Over Former Candidate Who Went Rogue

Lawyer Joe Ellis has been elected to Parliament in a casual election held today following the death of Gozitan MP Frederick Azzopardi, a race that had threatened to see the PN lose a seat in the House.

Ellis, 57, was elected on the third count with 1,968 votes, triumphing over Ryan Cefai Mercieca who received 1,425 votes.

The PN will breathe a sigh of relief at this result, seeing as it had disassociated itself from Cefai Mercieca in light of how the candidate had in 2018 lost a libel case he instituted over allegations that he had misappropriated EU funds and set up a sham NGO.

And in his final ruling, magistrate Francesco Depasquale said that Cefai Mercieca had presented a forged document and misled the court.

Despite the PN disassociating itself from Cefai Mercieca and launching procedures to kick him out of the party, the candidate decided to contest the casual election anyway.

“Politics are made by discussing ideas of how to elevate society and not by creating conjectures to exclude people,” he said.

Had he won the casual election, he would have become the fourth independent MP in Parliament, joining Godfrey Farrugia, Marlene Farrugia and Konrad Mizzi.
