‘Someone Must Shoulder Responsibility’: PN Treasurer David Camilleri Steps Down After Dubious Co-Option Vote

The Nationalist Party Treasurer David Camilleri has resigned in the wake of a dubious voting procedure for the co-option of David Stellini’s vacated parliamentary seat.

“I think the vote should take place again to ensure that most transparent process possible,” Camilleri said.

After the vote which saw Jean Pierre Debono take the post with a slim majority of just two votes, several party figures revealed that Stellini and Camilleri were not allowed to vote in the secret ballot.

Debono has since told the PN he will not accept the seat.

In a post on social media, Camilleri said that someone must shoulder responsibility for what happened and had no option to resign.

“When I said that I would not declare my vote, none of the 81 people present told me I wasn’t allowed to.

“[It could be that] there were those who noticed and did not speak up on purpose to do as much damage as they could to the Party,” Camilleri said.

Camilleri elaborated that he did not fully agree with the statute, saying that given that he previously represented the 11th district and he should have been allowed to vote.

He closed by declaring his loyalty to PN Leader Adrian Delia and the party.
