The Labour Party’s internal election has been concluded and confirmed the party’s new president, deputy leaders, international secretary, and members of its executive.

Alex Sciberras was confirmed as the new Labour Party President, beating Norma Saliba by some 14 votes.

The lawyer obtained 364 votes or 51% of the votes cast.

A total of 721 votes were cast in the election for a turnout percentage of 95.24%, the Labour Party said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, John Grech was elected as the party’s International Secretary with 407 votes, beating Georvin Bugeja.

The internal party polls closed yesterday and confirmed Ian Borg and Alex Agius Saliba as the party’s new Deputy Leader of Parliamentary Affairs and Deputy Leader of Party Affairs respectively.

Borg secured 95.8% of the vote for Deputy Leader for Parliamentary affairs, while Agius Saliba gained 92.3% of the vote for Deputy Leader for Party Affairs.

12 new members of the Labour Party Executive were also selected by delegates, these include: Ray Azzopardi, Guza Cassar, Yana Debono Grech, George Azzopardi, Jason Farrugia, Mariella Abela, Jason Micallef, Ray Falzon, Owen Grech, Matthew Chetcuti, Eman Felice, Rosette Cassar.

During his first speech as Deputy Leader of Party Affairs, Agius Saliba said his focus will centre around the word “flimkien” (together), “Because by working together, we were able to make the Labour Party the country’s strongest political force”.

He referenced the legacies left by former party leaders and Prime Ministers including Dom Mintoff, Alfred Sant, and Joseph Muscat, saying the party will continue to build on them.

During Borg’s speech, he referenced his growth from a young boy in his hometown to the Chairperson of the OSCE. He emphasised the importance of keeping one’s feet on the ground and remaining humble, not letting successes inflate one’s head: “I try to do this and forgive me if there were times I didn’t.”

He pledged to work alongside Agius Saliba for the good of the party and said the key is belief in the party and the work it does. He noted simple yet essential priorities the country needs: it needs to be clean, it needs sustainable development, positive tourism, an excellent public health service with an “acceptable waiting time”, and the education of Maltese children that remains “the key to our future”.

Borg said the country needs to appreciate its workers, “We need to continue to improve their salaries and conditions, if a Maltese person is ready to do a job we ensure we don’t get a foreign person to do it and further erode and break these conditions.”

“Foreign people that work in our country must respect us, our culture, our laws and we must respect them back because the Labour Party is the party for all workers.”

The conference is currently ongoing and will be concluded with a speech by Prime Minister Robert Abela.
