Jason Micallef has officially confirmed he will be running for the post of Deputy Leader for Partit Laburista on 13th September.

Saying his decision came after “long days of meetings, discussions, and a lot of thought”, Micallef said “this wasn’t an easy decision, at all”.

“I spoke in length with a number of people in the party, including leader Robert Abela and a number of official PL officials,” Micallef continued in a Facebook post shared earlier this morning. “Now, it’s time for me to start meeting with and listening to what a number of PL delegates have to say, the large majority of whom I know by name because I worked with them on multiple occasions. With them I’ve cried, celebrated and shared beautiful experiences in the PL.”

“The renewal the party requires needs to be done by us, hand in hand, from the roots,” Micallef continued. “Because together, we were there forever, in the good and the bad, with genuine love to this glorious party of ours.”

Earlier this week, Micallef had admitted he was “seriously considering” running for the post of PL deputy leader for party affairs.

“I am overwhelmed by the amount of people who reached out to me over the past two weeks or so,” Micallef had told Lovin Malta. “It all happened suddenly and the support is coming from multipole sources – delegates, stalwarts, even MPs – and I’m seriously considering it.”

Micallef has a lot of experience within the PL, serving as secretary general between 2003 and 2009 and later as executive chairman of ONE Productions Ltd.

He has built up a reputation as a straight shooter and as one of a few people within the PL who are ready to publicly criticise the government.

PL MEP Daniel Attard has already publicly endorsed him for the deputy leader role.
