‘Trees Are A Killer’: Santa Luċija Mayor Raises Eyebrows After She Calls Out… Trees?

The mayor of Santa Luċija has been getting flak after making some very strange comments online, saying that trees were “killers” and it was safer to drive than to walk.

“Trees are a killer if cars crash,” Charmaine St John reportedly said in conversation thread under a post about trees and Minister Ian Borg. “Cars wrap around the trees on impact,”

Beyond saying trees are killers, St John continued to say that it’s safer to drive than to walk.

“The pavement is there so that people can walk to Ħal Luqa. If people don’t want it’s always safer!” she said.

However, she did say that if you didn’t have a car, you could use the pavement to make the journey.

“But whoever doesn’t have a car and needs to walk to Ħal Luqa or the cemetery now can do so safer than before,” she said.

Her comments were quickly ridiculed online after they were shared widely.

One person even urged people to only “walk as a last resort”.

Many people were impressed that the Labour mayor would go so far as to call trees killers after a summer of PL being roundly criticised for chopping down trees across the island.

Lovin Malta reached out to Ms St John but did not receive a reply at the time of publishing.
