Political party ADPD will hold a protest against food and property inflation in Malta outside Parliament this Saturday.

ADPD deputy chairperson Sandra Gauci, who is set to spearhead the protest, told Lovin Malta that the protest will call out the authorities for not doing enough to control the recent spike in prices.

Protestors will also urge the government to safeguard the island’s food security by putting a halt to projects like the Qormi flyover project that sacrifice agriculture land, call for more transparency on the use of public funds when issuing tenders and direct orders, and propose that the annual Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) be issued twice this year.

They will also call for an end to the speculation in the property market, with Gauci warning “it has become a jungle out there, out-pricing young people who cannot afford their own home”.

Recent figures show that Malta registered a 5.4% annual inflation rate in April, the joint-lowest in the EU along with France.

Malta’s government has allocated several millions in public funds to absorb the impact of inflation on electricity and fuel prices and to grant importers of cereals, flour and animal feed to promote price stability and food security.

Prime Minister Robert Abela recently said that, without government aid, average drivers would have ended up spending over €20 more on fuel every single week.

However, consumers have still had to face significant inflation in food prices. Concerns have also been raised over whether some businesses are taking advantage of the inflation crisis to increase their prices by an exorbitant amount.
