Opposition leader Adrian Delia has cut short his attendance at the European People’s Party congress in Zagreb to fly back to Malta following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech.

Delia called for prudence with regards the ongoing police and judicial investigations but said that the arrest of Fenech has clear and obvious political connotations.

In particular, he called for the immediate resignation of Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri, both of whose Panama companies were supposed to receive money from 17 Black, a Dubai company owned by Fenech.

“The Prime Minister has political responsibilities that the Opposition has been calling for him to shoulder for years,” he said. “The Prime Minister today tried to give the impression that the only reality is that of investigations and courts. However, he must also tell us about the fact that Keith Schembri still shares his office.”

“The Prime Minister’s persistence [to keep Schembri and Mizzi in power] goes against the national interest and its damage on our country’s reputation will be felt for years to come.”
