Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne has said that no one is greater than Malta or the Labour Party when asked whether he thinks Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri should resign.

“The Labour Party has never been scared of taking decisions; no one is greater than the party or the country,” Fearne told the press ahead of a PL parliamentary group meeting.

Calls for Schembri’s and Mizzi’s resignations have intensified in recent days following the arrest of Yorgen Fenech in connection with the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. This is because leaked emails from the Panama Papers have shown that Mizzi and Schembri had planned to receive large sums of money from 17 Black, a Dubai company owned by Fenech, and Macbridge, a Dubai company whose owner is as yet unknown.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo this morning publicly called on Mizzi and Schembri to resign, warning that their continued presence in power is ultimately damaging the Labour Party.

Fearne called for full justice for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, stating that everyone who was involved in some way should pay for their actions.

“In the coming hours, our focus and concentration should be on ensuring that the case of the assassination of Caruana Galizia gets solved and on seeing that justice is served, not only to those who carried out the crime but to everyone who was involved in it in some way,” he said

“We need to start repairing the damage that has been done to Malta’s reputation, as well as to Caruana Galizia’s family, by solving this case.”

He refused to state whether he thinks Economy Minister Chris Cardona should resign after he was interrogated by the police in connection with Caruana Galizia’s assassination.

“I don’t want to pass any comments because I’m not informed about the interrogations, thats the police’s job,” he said. “Our priority should be to ensure that the case is solved and to repair Malta’s reputation. No one is bigger than the party r county and everyone must answer for their actions.”

Asked straight out whether he thinks he’s in a better position to handle the situation than Joseph Muscat, Fearne insisted that the Prime Minister enjoy the trust of his parliamentary group.
