Watch: ‘Do You Want One?’ – Jason Micallef Invited Journalists For A Coffee, So We Took Him Up On His Offer

Jason Micallef refused to answer any questions as he exited court this morning, telling journalists he was off to a coffee and asking them if they wanted one too. So Lovin Malta’s Clara Sciberras decided to take him up on his offer and sit with him.

During their chat, Jason spoke about his long relationship with Joseph Muscat, who he sees as more of a brother than a friend.

“The need to support Joseph Muscat yesterday came naturally,” Micallef, who walked into court shoulder-to-shoulder with the former prime minister yesterday, told Lovin Malta. “We went up the Labour Party together, I served under his leadership when he was Opposition Leader. There’s a big bond between us, more like brothers than friends. So for me to support him yesterday wasn’t even a question, not a thought, a natural pull that I will keep on doing till the end.”

“I wasn’t surprised, but I was very proud,” Micallef said of yesterday’s show of solidarity which saw thousands of people congregate in front of court.

“Naturally, it was very emotional, and it’s great to see how civil they were, despite provocation from different levels.”

Asked to elaborate on this last point, Micallef pointed at the “big doubts of any accidents” being triggered by the “solidarity meeting”, doubts which were reported on by the media and even saw a heavy police presence all over the capital.

“We got to an extremity in this country where one section can protest twice a week for a number of weeks, months, and years, and then, the so-called independent media basically implies that another section can’t organise a meeting, not a protest, with one of its own,” Micallef continued. “God is yet to create irony of this level.”

Meanwhile, Micallef said he also believed in the innocence of Chris Fearne, saying he had encouraged the former Deputy Prime Minister. But when asked about whether people like Fearne and Scicluna deserved the same show of respect as the one organised by Emanuel Cuschieri yesterday, Micallef was quick to dismiss it.

“Yesterday’s meeting was unique and spontaneous and was organised by no one,” Micallef said, saying Cuschieri’s invitation for everyone to go to Valletta was not “organisation”. But when asked why today didn’t see the same level of “spontaneity”, Micallef said “things are different” because of what the media triggered in this “vendetta”.
