President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola held a quick interview with Lovin Malta following the State of the European Union (EU) address.

“Reference to ‘no means no’. Saying that we need to do more to combat gender-based violence. Loving who you wish to love,” Metsola said as she began listing the key topics and suggestions brought forward by von der Leyen.

“Being the most climate ambitious continent on the planet. Making sure that we stand our ground against the dumping of cheaper products from outside the European Union that are produced with the dirtiest of fuels.”

“Looking ahead, making sure that our businesses and industries, including in Malta and Gozo, are cushioned from the social and economic impact of a pandemic and now a war that we are still feeling every day,” she continued.

Metsola further went on to acknowledge that while von der Leyen faced a lot of questions, some being criticisms, others wanting more, “at the end of the day, we can look back at the very difficult mandate with renewed energy for the next nine months.”

2. Highs and lows of EP Presidency

“I would say the most difficult day was when the cash-for-vote scandal erupted in the European Parliament where a small number of colleagues in the house have allegedly been caught in a very difficult scandal,” she explained.

“However the highest moment, besides when President Zelenskyy addressed the Chamber, is today because the rules that we worked on for almost 10 months to push through in order to at least plug the gaps and cut abuse, were just adopted 15 minutes ago. We closed a very difficult chapter,” she proudly continued.

“It hasn’t been an easy presidency, but we’re Maltese; we can work from one crisis to another and I’ll continue to do that.”
