President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, was greeted with a birthday cake presented to her by Germany’s Opposition Leader Friedrich Merz on her 46th birthday.

While visiting Berlin with the leaders of the European People’s Party – the EP group from which Metsola hails – Metsola and the EPP’s delegation met with Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.

Merz is currently the frontrunner of Germany’s upcoming elections, being widely projected as the country’s next Chancellor. Germans will go to the ballot box on 23rd February and the CDU is leading the pre-election polls.

Footage posted to social media earlier today shows Merz handing over the cake to Metsola who was beaming as everyone in the room sang happy birthday before she blew out the candles.

“Happy birthday, @roberta.metsola! Your dedication to a strong and united #Europe is an inspiration to all of us. Wishing you continued success and many more steps together toward shaping the future of our Union. All the best and good health! (FM),” Merz wrote on social media.

President of the EPP, Manfred Weber, also extended a kind public message to Metsola on her birthday, writing “🎂 #HappyBirthday, our dear @roberta.metsola 👏👏! You #inspire, you lead with conviction, you bring people closer to our House of European Democracy!”

Malta’s Opposition Leader, Bernard Grech, was also in attendance on this Berlin trip, with social media footage showing him touring the German Bundestag and meeting with other high-level politicians.

“We discussed issues of common interest such as quality of life, the competitiveness of the European economy and reducing bureaucracy, immigration, and security in Europe,” he wrote about the EPP Leaders’ Retreat hosted by the CDU.

Happy birthday, Metsola!
