Malta kicked off its presidency of the Council of Europe during yesterday’s commencement ceremony in Strasbourg.

“Today, we raised the Maltese flag at the heart of Strasbourg, officially marking the beginning of Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe,” wrote Minister Ian Borg on his socials.

“Honoured to open the 1,529th meeting of the Committee of Ministers’ Deputies in Strasbourg- the first under Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe.”

The Council of Europe’s mission is to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law across Europe and beyond. Presently, the top priority is to support Ukraine against Russia’s aggression and help ensure accountability and justice.

Since its foundation in 1949, the organisation has created a common legal space, centred on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), across its 46 member states. This represents a death-penalty-free zone or more than 700 million people.

“I reaffirmed Malta’s steadfast commitment to unity, dialogue, and the protection of human rights across Europe. Our Presidency begins with a series of key engagements in both Valletta and Strasbourg,” wrote Ian Borg on X.
