Watch: ‘Many Maltese Politicians Agree With Abortion But Are Afraid To Speak Out’, Cyrus Engerer Says During Brussels Protest

MEP Cyrus Engerer wasn’t mincing his words when talking about abortion during a protest being held in Brussels which saw local activists marching from the European Parliament to the Maltese Embassy.

“Maybe there aren’t many Maltese politicians like us who are vocal on this issue,” Engerer said at the gathered demonstration. “I know that there are many who, like me, like us, believe in this right, but are afraid to speak out.”

“They’re afraid to speak out because they believe that, if you do, you’ll be running the risk of political suicide,” Engerer continued. “That’s not a problem. It may be political suicide, but at the end of the day, if we believe in equality, we can’t have equality in Malta until everyone is equal.”

“So as a politician who’s always believed in and worked hard to fight for human rights, I can’t stop talking unless I see that we can see true equality in our country, including legal and medical protection to all our women, girls and people who can get pregnant.”

Engerer, along with activists from Women’s Right Foundation, MGRM and Moviment Graffitti, is currently leading a number of protests in Brussels, including one held yesterday in solidarity with the El Hiblu 3 terrorism case.
