Watch: MEP Alfred Sant Claims Mintoff Was Responsible For Malta Joining The EU
MEP Alfred Sant stirred controversy with his claim that Malta’s accession to the European Union was primarily the result of the efforts of former Prime Minister Dominic Mintoff, rather than Eddie Fenech Adami.
During his interview on the student platform Leħnek, Sant spoke on various themes related to the European Union referendum, the MEPs elections, political apathy and current themes.
“If the Labour Party won the election we would have gone down that road,” Sant started off.
“Between 1996 and 1998 we had already started and there was an agreement however things happened.”
“Basically, with all due respect Eddie Fenech Adami is not responsible for Malta joining the EU but Dominic Mintoff,” Sant added.
Malta had formally applied to join the EU in the early 1990s when Fenech Adami was Prime Minister and its application was frozen in 1996 after Sant took charge of the country.
Its application was reactivated in 1998 when the PN returned to government, and Malta formally joined the EU in 2004 following a referendum.
