European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has defended students who protested against the “despicable action” of Prime Minister Robert Abela following his criticism of the judiciary.

“If the leader of a country calls the judiciary or a member of the judiciary a terrorist, I think we have a problem,” she said.

Metsola said voters needed people who they could trust to take difficult decisions, and who know they are “not above the law”.

“You are accountable, especially if there are serious criminal charges filed against you.”

“I look forward towards a new young generation that will vote for the first time on 8th June and will choose change, will choose clean politics and will choose politics as a force for good,” she said, referring to the European Parliament elections in which she is a candidate.

Her comments about Maltese students came when she was asked by Lovin Malta about the violent suppression of anti-war protests around the world and recently in Europe.

“I grew up protesting. I am in politics because I spent more of my time protesting than studying, so as we are seeing now in Malta students protesting outside our law courts against the despicable action of our Prime Minister – that is something I will always protect, respect and fight for.”

Metsola was speaking to Maltese journalists on a visit to Ukraine, and also commented on the situation in Gaza, saying Israel’s “overwhelmingly disproportionate response” must stop “right now”.
