WATCH: Minister Insists That Two Parallel Inquiries Into Assassination Of Daphne Caruana Galizia Would ‘Do More Harm Than Good’ After Rule Of Law Resolution
Justice Minister Owen Bonnici has insisted that conducting a public inquiry parallel with a criminal investigation, will “probably end up causing more harm than good.”
“In my opinion, there is a strong legal argument against [the two parallel inquiries],” Bonnici said.
Lovin Malta approached Bonnici after a European Parliament resolution declared that the EU would be able to form an independent international inquiry into the death if the Maltese government failed to do so themselves.
The clause forms part of a wider resolution on rule of law shortcomings in both Malta and Slovakia which passed with 398 votes to 85 and 69 abstentions.
The resolution followed a challenging week for Malta in the European Parliament, with MEPs voting in favour of a text that declared Malta as having the characteristics of a tax haven.
Asked specifically on the proposal and whether the government intended to fight back on the issue, Bonnici said:
“[The government] has no reason to push back. My only interest is what is right, and what is right, according to the information we have, is to not have two concurrent inquiries.”
He then revealed that the Attorney General and the lawyers of the Caruana Galizia family has been in correspondence over the issue.
