Prime Minister Robert Abela has hit back at Opposition Leader Alex Borg’s Budget 2026 speech, describing it as “negative rhetoric” and promising to continue outlining his government’s vision to improve people’s quality of life.
Borg delivered his first official Budget reply as Opposition Leader on Tuesday evening, unveiling 50 proposals aimed at improving “the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people.”
The proposals, under the theme “Kwalità ta’ Ħajja Aħjar”, covered key areas including cost of living, transport, housing, mental health and governance reforms.

“Our country deserves leadership that listens, acts and builds a fairer Malta,” Borg said in Parliament.
“These 50 proposals are about giving people back their peace of mind and ensuring that every family can live with dignity.”
Speaking to the press on his way out of Parliament, Prime Minister Robert Abela described the Opposition Leader’s speech as “negative rhetoric.”
“Tonight we witnessed negative rhetoric. Tomorrow I will continue explaining the vision through which we will keep improving the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people,” Abela said.
