Labour Party president Ramona Attard has announced that she will not seek re-election, leaving the position open, regarding the internal elections within the Labour Party, choosing to communicate directly with the public.

In a video she shared, “In recent weeks, many have asked me what I will do. I have always had an open and sincere conversation with you, without any circumvention. The last weeks were very demanding, and I found myself more focused on the party than on myself. From the role of President, I saw that the party would be in the best position to carry out what it expected after the June elections. I shouldered the responsibility to prepare for the elections of deputy leaders and other roles.”

Attard, who has been an integral part of the Labour Party’s administration for the past four years, also revealed her decision not to run for any position in the upcoming internal elections.

“Therefore, after four years in the party administration, I can say that today I feel ready for a different challenge while continuing to work with the Prime Minister and the whole Labour Party team. This means that in the September elections, I will not contest the post of President nor any other post.”

Reflecting on her political journey, she expressed her vision for the Labour Party:
“My beliefs remain that I want to see the Labour Party as an open movement where we debate ideas and not people. Above all, I want to remain in the home of progressives and liberals. Yes, there are changes that require courage, but now we are more progressive. The answer should be yes because when we were not afraid, people believed in us and trusted us to improve their lives.”

Attard’s announcement comes after a long career within the party, where she has worked closely with both former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and current Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Following Attard’s announcement, Prime Minister Robert Abela and leader of the Labour Party expressed his support and appreciation for her contribution.
