Watch: PN MP Sits Out Of Holocaust Remembrance Event In Solidarity With Palestine

PN MP Albert Buttigieg will be sitting out of a holocaust remembrance event in parliament to send a message of solidarity with the people of Palestine.
“As we remember the pain and torment that the Jewish people endured 80 years ago, we forget or close our eyes to the pain and torment that the Palestinian people are enduring right now,” Buttigieg said in a powerful clip posted to his Facebook.
Buttigieg did not minimise the gravity and brutality of the holocaust, but he wanted to send a message that we cannot be selective of our memories.
“The Palestinian people have spent many years suffering. It’s ironic that we remember one but forget the other.”
The MP went on to point out the sobering number of Palestinian people killed as a direct result of the Israeli Defence Forces. He pointed out that, out of over 40,000 lives lost, many of them were innocent women and children.
“Tonight in parliament, I will leave my seat empty. I will not attend this commemoration not as a protest but to send a message that while we can remember our past, we must learn from it and work to become instruments of peace in solidarity with all people without any discrimination.”
Today marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz and while the world is celebrating, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are returning to northern Gaza by foot as part of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
The majority of Gaza’s infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, and schools, have been flattened and turned to rubble since Israel began its military campaign in October 2023. Since then, the death toll in the enclave has surpassed 47,000.
