Watch: Protesting Farmers Open Up To Robert Abela About Unequal Playing Field

Angry farmers who took part in a major protest today confronted Robert Abela about what they perceive to be an unfair state of play.

As Abela visited the protest in Floriana, farmers complained about the lack of controls and regulations on meat and food products imported to Malta from outside the EU.

“If we do something wrong, they [the authorities] just come and throw away all your meat but these guys just come in with no controls,” a farmer said.

When Abela questioned whether the products had been checked by other authorities before they left for Malta, the farmer stressed that checks must be carried out as soon as they arrive.

“They should spend an hour in quarantine so that we can see what they’re bringing over,” he said.

And when Abela asked them about the financial aid they receive from the government, a farmer told the Prime Minister straight out that they “put something in your left hand but then take it from your right”.
