Watch: Rosianne Cutajar Calls Bernard Grech A ‘Baby’ In Parliament, Angering MP Claudette Buttigieg

Sparks flew in Parliament yesterday as MPs debated an IVF law that will allow embryos to be tested for serious genetic problems, with PL MP Rosianne Cutajar at one point even calling Opposition Leader Bernard Grech a “baby”.

The incident occurred when PL MP Randolph Debattista was delivering an impassioned speech about the bill and accused the Opposition of spreading fear about the concept of cryopreservation.

PN Whip Robert Cutajar demanded Debattista clarify which PN MPs he was referring to, but Speaker Anglu Farrugia allowed the PL MP to continue, warning he will start throwing PN MPs out of the House if they keep on interrupting him.

At this moment, Grech walked out of the House, which didn’t go unnoticed by Debattista.
“Bernard Grech had told me u mur l’hemm (“oh, go away”) but he has just walked out himself…”

Cutajar seized the opportunity to take a dig at Grech, calling him a “baby”, but this comment didn’t go unnoticed by PN Claudette Buttigieg who immediately informed the Speaker.

“Rosianne Cutajar has insulted Bernard Grech and called him a baby when he just walked out to take a phone call while leaving his stuff behind. Do you really think he just stormed out?”

Cutajar cheekily retorted that the PN MP “heard her well this time”, a reference to when Buttigieg had accused Cutajar of calling her a prostitute (qaħba) last February.

“It seems that Claudette Buttigieg has something against Rosianne Cutajar,” Debattista added with a wry smile.

During his speech, Debattista alleged that a “small group of people” was spreading misinformation within the Opposition, the Church and certain parts of the media.

“One starts suspecting that these comments were written by the same few people who organise strategies for different organisations,” he said.

“They tried to place us in a battle against people with disabilities, as if anyone in this country would believe that.”

“They also tried to make it out as though we’ve embarked on a Nazi-like tactic to manipulate embryos and try to perfect them. Misinformation has been spread within churches that this bill will allow people to choose the colour of their babies’ eyes – lies like this to spread fear and moral panic because some people think spreading panic allows them to win an argument.”

During the sitting, Debattista also criticised Grech for proposing the introduction of polar body testing on oocytes as an option for people who object to PGT-M on a moral basis, but Health Minister Chris Fearne noted that the protocol already allows for that possibility.
