Rosianne Cutajar has announced she has opened two cases of libel after being publicly called a "whore on heat" (qaħba f'xalata).

One of the libel cases is set to be against retired auditor Godfrey Leone Ganado, who made the comments about the Labour MP on Facebook.

"This type of verbal violence is not acceptable in a democratic society and it continues to keep women away from participating in public life. I am doing what I am doing not for myself, but for all women and for those women who are still coming up," Cutajar said in a public statement announcing the libel cases.

The second libel case is set to be against Rachel Williams, a prominent Occupy Justice activist

The Labour MP, who is no stranger to controversy, confirmed that this was the first time she was opening libel cases in her eight years in politics.

Saying she believed in free speech, she also believed that public debate needs to be "dignified", and felt she needed to call out the verbal violence at this key time when the government was attempting to combat harassment and violence.

Rosianne Cutajar has been battling rumours of a sexual nature for years

Leone Ganado's comments were made in the context of allegations brought against Cutajar by the late Daphne Caruana Galizia. Caruana Galizia had alleged that Cutajar used to pose as a Sicilian escort on an Italian student online forum, allegations Cutajar strongly denies.
