3 Gold, 3 Silver And 2 Bronze Medals For Team Malta From Second Day At GSSE

The second day of competition followed the first day’s success for Team Malta at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE).
The competition is being held in Andorra between 26th May and 31st May and it has brought together over 1,000 athletes, coaches, officials, heads of delegation and dignitaries. Athletes are competing in 19 different sports, including athletics, basketball, judo, rugby 7s, cycling, shooting, karate, swimming, volleyball, table tennis, and tennis.
In the basketball court Team Malta, which included Amber Melgoza, Kristy Galea, Stephanie De Martino and Danika Galea, secured their first ever medal in basketball 3X3 as the women’s selection reached the tournament final before losing to Luxembourg who were the defending champions.
Their male counterparts had a good shot at a medal, however, they lost games throughout the tournament. They lost the semi-final against Andorra 21-16, this being the third defeat against Andorra in these games.
In the gymnastics arena, youngster Sophie St John won two more gold medals as she triumphed in the women’s vault and the women’s balance beam with a score of 12.550 and 12.900 respectively. Her fellow teammate, Julia Galea place sixth in the vault event.
Gymnast Julia Galea placed second for the individual floor routine exercise and Sophie St John took the bronze in the same event, placing Malta on two out of three positions on the podium.
A silver medal was secured by the women’s swimming 4X100 Medley team consisting of Victoria Balderacchi, Zoe Cawsey, Michela Portelli and Nirvana Micallef.
Sasha Gatt added to her medal tally as she took the silver medal in the 1500-metre freestyle event yesterday afternoon. This follows her success on the first day of competition during which she secured the first gold medal for the sport. She competed in the 800-metre freestyle and won against Monaco’s Lisa Pou by just 0:01.48.

In the dojo, Heorhii Denysov secured a bronze medal for Malta in the men’s 75-kilo category, bringing the karate medal tally at the games to two gold and two bronze.
In the shooting scene, Gianluca Chetcuti claimed bronze in the Men’s Trap event. After finishing first in the qualification round earlier in the day, Chetcuti delivered another strong performance to secure his spot on the podium.
Eleanor Bezzina who competed in the 10-metre air pistol event, missed out on a place on the podium as she finished fourth. Bezzina was the winner of the gold medal in the same event for the last two editions of the games.
Team Malta is now just one gold medal short of its target of nine, which would make it the country’s best ever performance at a foreign-hosted GSSE.
Do you think they can secure a gold in the last three days of competition?
