Maltese long-distance runner Marko Bezzina was back at it again last weekend, completing the insane task of running all around Malta in less than 16 hours. And he didn’t only manage, but smashed his target in the process!

“After some months (or years) of training, last Sunday it was time to embark on the sub16hrs project Round Malta run, consisting of 138km of trails and roads with around 2600m of elevation,” Bezzina wrote this afternoon. “It turned out even better than expected as the run was completed in a total elapsed time of 14hrs 32mins.”

“Supported by an amazing crew throughout, running buddies who joined me on different segments and fair weather conditions, it was a day I’ll remember forever.”

“Green trails, blue seas; the side of Malta I like most but the urban side has also some amazing views of the bastions,” Bezzina continued. “This is the Fastest Known Time for the full loop of Malta, a journey that started with a 10km run in 2019.”

“The purpose for this run was to inspire others to live and run with gratitude, feed your mind positive self talk with confidence but not arrogance, and smile,” Bezzina said, before shifting his focus to the next big athletic challenge heading Malta’s way.

“I’d like to wish best of luck to all athletes taking part in the Malta Marathon this Sunday, I’ll be along the way supporting you all!”

Bezzina finished his celebratory post by dedicating his run to his partner Claudia Cassar “for her endless support and love”, while also giving a “special thanks” to his entire family, his “amazing coach/mentor” Kevin Zammit, all his teammates at Team Qorru and the runners who joined him on Sunday.

“And last but not least, my dog Buddy for joining me on almost all my training runs,” Bezzina finished.

This isn’t the first time that Bezzina made headlines for his amazing challenges.

In December 2023, he was crowned the winner of an incredible test of endurance for which he ran 187.77 kilometres in 28 hours.

Then, mere months later, he launched the “Three Islands Adventure”, which saw him covering the perimeter of all three of the Maltese Islands in one go.

“The journey is more important than the destination,” Bezzina had said in May 2024. “My first step was signing up for a 10km race some five years ago. Since then, sports has developed into a lifestyle for me. Keep up what you’re doing, even after you reach your first goal.”
