You might think hockey is not a big thing on an island in Malta, but a plucky team of locals will easily prove you wrong. Earlier this year, Qormi Daikin Hockey Club won big at a Mediterranean-wide tournament in Sicily… and they’ve got their sights set on even more gold.
Last week, the young Qormi hockey team took a trip to Messina to compete in the second edition of the International Mediterranean Cup. The event was hosted at the complex run by the Cus Unime ASD.
Our favourite yellow-wearing boys travel in packs, so a 20-player team went up for this competition. For the first match, they destroyed CUS Unime taking a two-goal lead through their amazing clanbros Zac De Giovanni and Captain Steve Tanti, earning their first victory.
On their second face-off the clan obliterated the PU Messina team, dragging them through the fields with a breezy 5-0 win. Is there anything these guys can’t do? Probably crocheting. For the third match the team kicked PU Messina’s ass again, and later on won a 2-1 match against CUS Unime. The last few minutes of this match were filled with exciting counter-attacks and fast paced movement, but the yellows still managed to pull through with a victory.
Our boys were presented with the first place trophy, which was collected by their top scorer Jonathan Pace.
Now, the Qormi hockey team will be facing a fresh new challenge tomorrow, and this time, it’s local.
The Super Cup Final goes down tomorrow, and Qormi will be facing one of the leading hockey clubs in Malta, Floriana Youngstars HC.
Now that both teams are local for tomorrow’s match, we’re rooting for both Qormi and Floriana, so no hard feelings.
