‘An Icon For Maltese Waterpolo And A True Gentleman’: Neptunes Captain Niki Lanzon Announces Retirement After Nearly 25 Years

After leading his team, the Neptunes, to a quadruple cup win in the premier league last weekend, Captain Niki Lanzon has announced his retirement through the team’s Facebook page

The post quickly amassed nearly 500 reactions, with hundreds of people sharing kind words and well wishes for the local waterpolo hero.

Professional momager extraordinaire Carina Camilleri chimed in, calling Lanzon the “best captain”

Lanzon was also referred to as a legend, a true inspiration and gentleman

‘Lanz’, as his team respectfully know him as, will be entering the closing of his 30s later this month

But the incredible athlete, who’s seen the team through nine championships (five of which consecutively set the record for Neptunes between 2010 and 2014), six knock-outs, nine Presidents Cup and eight winter leagues from the age of 15 has decided to step down from the sport.

With a man of his calibre standing down, we can hear the entire female population of Balluta Bay and surrounding areas collectively sighing a wind of turmoil and his old teammates must now be waking up to a new era of their career. Don’t worry ladies, he will most likely still be cheering his pals on from the stands – your thirst will still, kinda, be quenched.

Do you have any memories of Niki with the Neptunes?
