ASA Malta Unveils Four-Year Plan To Boost Women’s Water Polo

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has officially announced National Coach Aurelien Cousin has signed a four-year contract, cementing a long-term commitment to pushing the sport to new heights both locally and internationally.
This move is all about stability, continuity, and a clear vision for the future of water polo in Malta.
But that’s not all, ASA Malta also kicked off the first school visits as part of their ASA School Drive, bringing water polo straight into classrooms and pools. The initiative aims to give students hands-on experience with the sport, inspiring the next generation and widening participation at the grassroots level.
President Karl Izzo called it a historic day, saying, “This is a historic moment for our sport. Securing our national coach for the next four years provides the vision and consistency we need at elite level, while our work in schools ensures that the base of the sport continues to grow. Today we are investing in both the present and the future of Maltese water polo.”
Meanwhile, Caroline Schiavone, ASA Director for Women’s Water Polo, hailed the School Drive as a game-changer: “By reaching into classrooms and giving every girl the chance to try water polo, we are breaking barriers and widening the base of our sport. This initiative is not just about introducing a new activity, it is about creating opportunities, building confidence, and inspiring the next generation of female athletes to dream big.”
ASA Malta also gave a huge shoutout to SportMalta, the Malta Olympic Committee, the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, and all participating schools for their support in making these initiatives possible.
With these two big milestones, a long-term coaching deal and the launch of the School Drive, Maltese water polo is diving into a bold new chapter, focused on growth, opportunity, and success at every level.
