Breaking: Malta Women’s Team Promoted To UEFA Nations League B After Beating Latvia

Malta has been promoted to League B of the UEFA Women’s Nations League after beating Latvia 2-1 at home today.

Requiring a win or a draw to secure promotion, things looked troubling for Malta when they fell behind to Karina Miksone penalty in the 50th minute.

However, Malta roared back and equalised eight minutes later courtesy of Hellas Verona striker Kailey Willis. Then, in the 72nd minute, Maria Farrugia scored the winner.

The result means Malta has topped the C1 group with 16 points and have automatically qualified to League C. Latvia, second on 10 points, can still qualify through a promotion play-off.

This is the first time since the UEFA Nations League was created that a Maltese team has qualified past League C and is a fantastic achievement for the nation.
