First-Ever ‘Bowl’ Becomes Reality As Bulgarian Champions Go Head-To-Head With Malta’s Sole American Football Team

The first-ever American Football ‘Bowl’ has hit Malta after one Maltese team took on Bulgarian national champions on home soil.

Phoenix Malta faced Sofia Knights, champions of their own local league, under the Maltese sun and before hundreds of fans in an American-style set-up.

It was first for the Maltese side, who fought hard and even bagged a few points against the formidable Bulgarians. In the end, however, Sofia Knights’ experience led them to a 48-6 win against the local boys.

A few words were shared by Phoenix coach Domenico Barbuzza, who hailed his team for their performance after taking the field with nothing held back.

“The bar was set,” he said. “And thus, the goal was to experience and test the abilities of the local side against a stronger team.”

“The players demonstrated courage and determination, which is what we wanted to see.”

With American Football finally making its way to our shores, this could possibly be the start of a new sporting movement that could see one of the cornerstones of American sporting culture become a mainstay in Malta.
