Floriana FC Asks To Play In Black Armbands In Tribute To Earthquake Victims
The Malta Football Association has accepted a request by Floriana FC for its players to wear black armbands during their Malta Premier League game against Mosta FC this weekend as a sign of mourning for the thousands of lives lost by the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake.
In a letter to the Malta Football Association, Floriana FC vice-president Shaheryar Ghaznavi said the club was deeply saddened by the news of the earthquake, which killed over 16,000 people in Turkey and neighbouring Syria, and wishes to pay its respects.
“Floriana Football Club is deeply saddened by the recent tragic news and feels the duty to manifestly express its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to wish a speedy recovery to the people of Turkey,” Ghaznavi wrote.
“Hence, we would highly appreciate if our Senior Squad players will be authorised to wear black armbands during the Premier League match Floriana FC vs Mosta FC on Sunday 12th February at the National Stadium.”
This gesture of mourning will also serve as a sign of respect to our club’s Turkish commercial partners.”
Floriana FC urged the MFA to invite all other Premier League clubs to wear black armbands too, stating it is convinced the local football community shares the same sentiment of sadness.
