Gżira United enjoyed one of their most memorable nights in recent history as they defeated Croatian giants Hajduk Split 3-1 away to qualify to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
Gżira had lost the first leg 2-0 and entered tonight’s tie as massive underdogs. Split took the lead after only seven minutes through Bassel Jradi and went into half-time 1-0 up.
However, the Maroons produced something of a miracle in the second half. Jefferson equalised with a well-placed header after 57th minutes before Hamed Koné gave them the lead some ten minutes later with a stunning scissor kick.
And, in injury time no less, Koné kept his cool to score another fantastic strike to see Gżira Utd through where they will face Latvian team Ventspils.
Unfortunately, tonight was less joyful for fellow Maltese side Hibernians, who crashed out of the competition after losing 1-0 to Shakhtyor Soligorsk despite the Belarussian side having been reduced to ten men early on in the game.
