A team of young Maltese weightlifters made their mark this weekend at the Challenge 210 Cup in Tramelan, Switzerland, bringing home four medals against tough international competition.

The event attracted over 200 athletes from 10 countries, competing across multiple age categories from U13 all the way to Masters. And Malta’s rising stars certainly didn’t disappoint.

Aaliyah Gatt led the charge, dominating the Youth U17 group with a gold medal performance. She lifted 70kg in the Snatch and 95kg in the Clean & Jerk, improving on her showing from a competition in Spain just two weeks ago.

Aaliyah also grabbed silver in the Junior U20 final classification, proving she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Nathan Mifsud continued his international rise, taking gold in Youth U15 and silver in Youth U17, lifting 89kg in the Snatch and 109kg in the Clean & Jerk in a field of 17 athletes.

In the Cadet U13 category, Mattias Mifsud claimed silver with lifts of 35kg Snatch and 41kg Clean & Jerk, while Kaya Curmi Inguanez snagged bronze in Junior U20, finishing just two points shy of silver with 54kg and 71kg in her lifts.

Even newcomers made their presence felt: Thea Demanuele, competing internationally for the first time, showed great composure with lifts of 39kg Snatch and 47kg Clean & Jerk.

The Malta Weightlifting Association praised the team’s determination and performances, highlighting that the experience gained in Switzerland will be invaluable ahead of the European Union Cup, which Malta will host from 5th to 7th December.

These achievements were made possible thanks to the continued support of SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee, proving that Malta’s next generation of weightlifters is ready to lift the country onto the international stage.
