Gritty Malta Succumbs To Spain But Avoids Humiliation Against World Class Opponents
It was always going to be a David vs Goliath matchup – a star-studded Spain versus a Maltese team which had gone 13 years without a competitive home win prior to last weekend.
And it was one-way traffic from start to finish, with Spain dominating possession and barely allowing Malta a single shot on goal in the second round of the Euro 2020 qualifiers. The home fans were in high spirit, packing the Ta’ Qali Stadium and booing Spain’s captain Sergio Ramos whenever he received the ball.
However, Spain broke the deadlock after half an hour, after Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata picked up a cross to slip the ball through the hands of Malta goalie Henry Bonello.
Morata then doubled the lead in the 72nd minute with a powerful header after a perfect cross from Jesus Navas.
There were roars from the crowd a few minutes later when Michael Mifsud found himself one on one with the keeper but he was in an offside position.
