Gżira Utd Crash Down To Earth In Latvia And Now Need A Miracle To Qualify In Europa League

Gżira Utd need a Liverpool-style miracle to qualify to the next stage of the Europa League after crashing to a 4-0 defeat away to Latvian side FK Ventspils.

Expectations were high for the Maroons after they knocked out Croatian giants Hajduk Split last week, in one of the most memorable games in recent Maltese football history.

However, they were unable to build on that performance in Latvia.

Kaspars Svarups scored FK Ventspils’ first goal in the 41st minute and the Latvian side doubled their lead through Helio Monteiro five minutes after the break.

Two late goals from Ingars Stuglis and Aiyegun Tosin made it 4-0 for FK Ventspils, leaving Gżira Utd with a mammoth task to accomplish next Thursday.

Manager Giovanni Tedesco tried to rally the troops in his post-match press conference, stating that: “Nothing is impossible in football and we’ll do our utmost to overturn this result”.
