It’s been an astonishing year for Malta’s 17-year-old football superstar Haley Bugeja and the Sassuolo starlet could now be in for a huge career move, with reports linking her to Juventus.
Italian women’s football news site lfootball.it quoted sources saying Juventus, holders of Serie A Femminile, are serious about purchasing Bugeja, who was recently voted as the best young player in the Italian league.
The report said that negotiations between Juventus and Sassuolo are at an advanced stage, with the possibility that Juve could acquire Bugeja and immediately loan her back to Sassuolo for a year.
Bugeja enjoyed a remarkable debut season at Sassuolo, finishing as the club’s top goalscorer and one of the top five goalscorers in Serie A.
The wonder kid has also been a key feature on the national team where she became the first Maltese woman to score a hat-trick during an international competition.
In an exclusive interview with Lovin Malta this week, Bugeja said the attitude towards sports in Malta needs to change to encourage more athletes to follow in her footsteps.
“There are too many people who, when they think about going abroad, don’t because of this attitude that we’re from Malta and we’re not capable,” she said.
“I hope that I can be an inspiration for people who say they aren’t capable of doing it,” she said.
“If we continue living life with the mentality that we come from a small island, that we don’t have the resources, that we don’t have the professionalism, we are not going to make it.”
