Ħamrun Making History: Spartans Make It To Next Round Of UEFA Europa Conference League
Malta’s very own Ħamrun Spartans has made it to the next round of the UEFA Europa Conference League, after a historic win.
It’s the first time a Maltese football club has made it through to the playoffs of such a prestigious European competition!
The win against Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia was secured during the penalties after a long and intense match.
The Maltese representatives came in strong after a 0-1 defeat at Ta’ Qali. It was a last-second goal by Ryan Camenzuli which put the Spartans ahead 2-1 and forced extra time, which eventually led to a penalty shoot-out in front of a nervous crowd.
Tsuami – who had actually scored Levski’s equaliser in stoppage time – did not manage to score, with Ħamrun’s Bonello successfully saving to put the Spartans ahead.
But the drama was far from over, with Levski’s Mihajlov moving before Fedele’s penalty, granting the Ħamrun midfielder a second chance which he instantly capitalised on.
Ħamrun’s next trip is now to Serbia, where they will face Partizan Belgrade.
Well done Ħamrun Spartans!
