Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher and his son James, a defender for Wigan Athletic, have been granted Maltese citizenship, Times of Malta has reported.

Malta Football Association president Bjorn Vassallo confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the Carraghers regarding the possibility of 22-year-old James representing Malta.

“We will not shy from signing players internationally; everyone is doing it, so why not us?”

Carragher spent 17 years at Liverpool and was part of the team that secured the legendary 2005 Champions League final victory over AC Milan. He now works as a Sky Sports pundit.

Carragher has spoken about his Maltese heritage in the past. His grandfather Paul Vassallo was born in Malta before moving to the UK and his mother Paula is also Maltese.
