Joseph Portelli’s Next Target Is Ħamrun Spartans Reaching European Group Stages And Recording Perfect Maltese Season
After Ħamrun Spartans won the Maltese Premier League with four games to spare, its owner Joseph Portelli opened up on his big dreams for the club.
Speaking to TVM, Portelli pointed out that while Ħamrun Spartans may have won 19 games this season, they also drew two and lost one, which he said means “the team isn’t ready”.
He also reiterated his dream for Ħamrun Spartans to become the first-ever Maltese club to reach the group stages of a European competition, stating that a lot of work must be carried out over the next few months to reach that goal.
Ħamrun Spartans came agonisingly close to the UEFA Europa Conference League group stages this season, knocking out Alashkert, Velez Mostar and Levski Sofia, before eventually losing to FK Partizan in the final match before the groups.
Since taking over the club, the construction magnate has become synonymous with grand plans and dreams. In 2021, he revealed plans to buy a foreign club – at the level of Italy’s Serie C, England’s EFL League Two or above – and affiliate it to Ħamrun Spartans.
Earlier this year, he raised eyebrows when he resigned as Ħamrun Spartans President to register himself as a player and get a few minutes on the pitch towards the end of the season. However, this plan was shot down by the Malta Football Association and he has since returned to his presidency role.
